MUDs & MOOs
Mud - Mud stands to mean multi-user dungeon, domain or dimension. It is a multiplayer computer game that combines elements of role-playing games and chat rooms. Each person in the room gets to make up a charachter which resembles them, then they move around a 'virtual' world whilst interacting with other people. Players usually interact with each other and the surroundings by typing commands.
Moo - Stands to mean Object orientated. It is a 'text' online virtual reality system which multiple users can use and are all connected at the same time. If you log on, it will say something such as "You are standing on the grassy banks of a wide river." You then have to respond with what you want to do next, the computer will then respond to you. Players read descriptions of rooms, objects, events and other characters and respond to this with commands/comments.
I have never heard of either of these before so had to do a bit of background research, I think I have summarised the purpose of them in the shortest way I can. Do you agree with what I have explained them to be?

Hi Megan. I wasn't too sure of what these were at first. They seem to be going alot further than just communicating with people, instead 'interacting'. I've mentioned briefly in my post that they don't necessarily represent the person behind this identity which may be fun aspect of 'falsified reality' but at the same time could be a concern because of its threat to the vulnerable (paedophilia for example). On a lighter note, MUD does sound pretty good though if you wanted to play games which you cant access due to additional costs (e.g. console games or board games). Have you played any of the games on MSN?
Hey Peter! :)
I had NEVER heard of them before! I was baffled to say the least! Yes when I was doing my research online I found a website mentioning how they create a little person in which they use within the game, which is supposed to 'represent' them but obviously some people will probably make a character which is nothing like them, that they perhaps just want to be like and this is a way of living as that person virtually.
I use to play a game on MSN, years ago though, would that be a MUD? I think I am still quite confused by the terms! I have vision of both MUDs and MOOs being chat rooms where you're speaking to someone giving them directions of what you want to do next!
