What do I think of the difference between online seminars/real life seminars?
I think that doing it online provides a bit more work/thought on my own opinion than what I'd probably be doing if these seminars where done how they usually are. I also think that in seminars I can be quite quiet and not always have an opinion, and then later think of my own thoughts on what was raised and wished I'd voice them, with online seminars I can reflect on my thoughts and do this! I also think that in real seminars the tutors spur on a lot of thoughts/conversations, but in this istance it is the students spurring each other on or their own thoughts. It's letting us develop our own opinion on certain subjects, in which may be left at that, or may be questionned by fellow students.
I think that it's good being online as well because YOU decide when YOU want to do the work and how much - depending on how well you want to do, etc. So instead of HAVING to prepare stuff for say Monday morning, you can be in charge of your time schedule with this unit and decide when is suitable for you to do the work on a weekly basis. Whether this be two hours a day, or ten in one.
I think the language used in blogs, in normal cases is easy to understand, but some I have viewed on here have been very academic and big word-ed! Personally this puts me off reading it all because I'd rather read something that was easy to quickly scroll through and that I'd understand in a new way because hopefully they'd be putting forward their thoughts in their own way etc.

Some very good work, well done.
On the language in blogs, I agree (although I probably habitually use longer words than most people do -but then I've been an academic for donkey's years!)
One of the things about using language that you're comfortable with is that it makes it easier to think with. Because of this, it makes it easier to understand with too.
The problem comes with complex ideas that would need long phrases to identify unless you use the 'jargon'. Then it's not long before you're using jargon terms about other jargon terms and this can be off-putting for the outsider.
But academia isn't the only place this goes on. Think about the language of make-up. How many of the terms you don't give a second thought to would be unclear to one of the lads on the course?
yeah i like online blogging as it gives you time to think about what to say and develop your own opinions in your own time.
like, sometimes in semianrs when i'm asked a question I just say what comes in 2 my head straight away then later think of something way better to say when ive had time to think about it. so with blogs it's good to read eachother's then decide what we think and reply.
and i agree that the "big word-ed-ness" puts me off reading peoples blogs, im glad u thot so too megan!!!!
xxx
yeah i give up reading things that are complex and full of big words because i cant understand them therefor don't take it in properly. i much prefer reading easy and simple things.
I agree with alyson to blogging does give you much more time to thing and say something more constructive rather than saying something for the sake of it as i often cant think of things on the spot.
I agree with what Dave said that 'jargon' can be used in lots of different areas other than just academic issues and that when I am talking about something I know about, the next person next to me might not know about them and might not understand what I am talking about. I think that if this happened IRL people would probably say - what is that? Sometimes in seminars people are emmbarassed so sit tight and dont say anything, where as on here, If I dont understand anything - there is loads of blogs to read to help me develop an understanding and plenty of people to ask too. I also think this unit allows you to develop your own opinion on things too instead of being influenced without realising on certain opinions!
I think that everyone, well I shouldnt say everyone, but a lot of people probably read something then re-word it in their own way so they can understand it, the blog is a good way of quickly jotting down the way you have thought of something so that when it comes to writing our assignments we can remember how we understood certain topics in the first place!
