Website Analysis! #1

General Overview of Website

The website that I have chosen to analyse is http://www.handbag.com/. From the title of the website – ‘Handbag’, you would probably straight away guess that this website is directed at women, as the word Handbag is associated with women more so than men.

For those of you who have never come across this website, Handbag is a website which offers the audience content evolved around the topics of Fashion, Beauty, Sex & General Life, Celebrity Gossip and Entertainment.

The content within the website, I think fits a stereotypical role of ‘women’ and what they are interested in. Although a majority of women are interested in putting on make up, looking good, and hearing the latest celebrity gossip, this is not what all women are interested in.

So although the website is trying to appeal to a large democratic scale of women – it is causing a digital divide by the fact that it only really appeals to women, and only to those who are interested in the topics the website covers.

It also causes further digital divide, as I would personally say that it has an appeal to a certain age range due to the ‘Sex’ aspect of the site. I think that this website would appeal to 17+ year olds, but not any younger than this.

I think that what you said about 'digital devide' is very ineteresting. It is the first time that I thought about it in this way.

I guess that the other way to look at it is by saying that it is simply 'directed' to a different kind of audience. Just like some magazines are for women and others for men. Although there we dont seem to say it is a 'textual devide' or whatever. Maybe we just try to lable things too much online.

I could be wrong with using the digital divide in this reference, I think I must have made a note about it in my notes from the readings about it also being used in this way - perhaps my own opinion or something that was said in text? Who knows! Maybe Dave could let us know if it can be used in the way I have used it?

Excellent work, I'm lost in admiration! Not just a comprehensie response to the assignment, but posted in small tight-ish chunks in the right order! Well done! (However, you've not gotten a handle on the labelling -this should be the same for related posts, it's the overall title if you like [it allows you to refer back to a group of posts] what is more, any post can have several labels according to the content, perhaps 'theme' would be a better word than label?

Digital divide: was originally between those with Inet access and those without. It was pointed out that white western males predominated in the 'haves' category -all the traditionally less powerful groups were in the 'have nots'. This privileged vs underprivileged split was then expanded to be used for any split along lines that have nothing to do with inherent abilities, so there is arguably a digital gender divide still, an age divide and a wealth divide.

So, I can see where you're coming from, but I think I agree with Sophia in as much as I feel that perhaps you've pushed the term a bit too far into the 'microsocial' area. On balance I think it's best to see your example as targetted towards a particular market
